If you've been to Mexico (or maybe a Mexican grocery store) you might be familiar with the Bimbo brand of pastry snacks. I guess the American meaning of "Bimbo" never made it down south! Anyway, the "Hispanicized" way of referring to pound cake is "panque" so that is why these are called panques (pän-kɛs). Those of us with Spanish-speaking parents may have heard Corn Flakes referred to as "confleis" growing up. Thanks for listening to my cross-culture lesson, lol.
