Just finished this painting last night. I was experimenting with a new technique where I create texture with water-soluble wax as a base layer. The main issue I have with toned paper is its smoothness. I don't like painting on smooth surfaces but I like toned paper, so this helps me get around that limitation. The reason I like texture, especially with gouache, is because I need ways to manipulate edges to get soft transitions between shapes. If I have texture I can make some ragged edges where each shape meets the next. It softens the edges and makes it look more natural.
